First: where did you pay?
Check the receipt email. If it says receipt from Apple, you subscribed through the App Store and you cancel on your iPhone. If the receipt came from Signeasy, Adobe, Readdle, or DocuSign directly, you paid on their website and you cancel there. The app itself usually can't cancel an App Store subscription for you.
Cancel an App Store subscription on iPhone
Open Settings and tap your name
Your name is the first row at the top of the Settings app.
Tap Subscriptions
You'll see active subscriptions and, below them, expired ones. Signeasy, Acrobat Reader, PDF Expert, and DocuSign all show here if you bought them inside the app.
Tap the app you want to stop
The screen shows the plan, the price, and the renewal date. Check the date so you know when the next charge would have happened.
Tap Cancel Subscription
You may need to scroll down to find it. Confirm, and the subscription is set not to renew. If you're on a free trial, Apple advises canceling at least 24 hours before the trial ends.
If the subscription isn't in the list
Apple's own help page covers this. Search your email for receipt from Apple or invoice from Apple and look at which Apple Account it was sent to. If it's a family member's account, they need to cancel it. If it's another account of yours, sign in with that one.
If there's no Apple receipt at all, you probably paid the company directly. Your bank or card statement shows who charged you. For Signeasy, Adobe, PDF Expert, or DocuSign web plans, sign in to your account on their website and look for billing or plan settings, or contact their support.
After you cancel
Canceling turns off the next renewal. It does not refund charges that already went through. In most cases the Subscriptions screen then shows the date your current period ends, and you can keep using the paid features until then. Some apps end a free trial as soon as you cancel it, so finish anything you're in the middle of first.
If you were charged and didn't mean to be, you can ask Apple for a refund. Apple decides each request. Our guide to asking Apple for a refund after a free trial walks through it.
Before your access ends, export any signed documents you want to keep. Some signing apps store your files in their own cloud account, so save copies to Files or email them to yourself.
What reviewers mention
We don't quote reviews, and most of these apps are well rated overall. When people leave low ratings for PDF and signing apps on the App Store, the same themes come up: being charged when a trial ended, not knowing where to cancel, upgrade prompts in the middle of signing, and paying monthly for something they use a few times a year.
Reading current reviews yourself is the best check. The App Store review pages for Signeasy, DocuSign, Acrobat Reader, and PDF Expert are linked in the sources at the bottom of this page. Our Signeasy and Adobe comparisons go into each app in more detail.
If you only sign a few PDFs a year
Many people subscribed to one of these apps to sign one lease, one contract, or one form. For that, you may not need a subscription at all. Apple's free Markup handles a simple one-page signature, and our guide to signing a PDF on iPhone shows how.
If you want dates, checkboxes, initials, and a file that shows correctly on Windows and Android, eSign PDF is a one-time purchase. There's nothing to renew, so there's nothing to cancel later. It signs PDFs you received; it doesn't send documents out for other people to sign. If you do send, a subscription tool like DocuSign or Signeasy is still the right choice.
If you only sign now and then
eSign PDF is $59.99 one-time (US): lifetime, no renewal. No account, nothing uploaded, and every PDF is flattened on export so your signature shows on any device.
FAQ
I deleted the app. Am I still being charged?+
Yes, deleting an app doesn't cancel its subscription. Go to Settings → your name → Subscriptions and cancel it there.
Why can't I cancel inside the app?+
If you subscribed through the App Store, Apple handles the billing, so the cancel button is in your iPhone Settings, not in the app.
Will I lose my signed documents when I cancel?+
It depends on the app. Some store documents in their own cloud account. Export anything you want to keep to Files or email before your access ends.
Does canceling get my money back?+
No. Canceling only stops the next renewal. To ask for money back on an App Store charge, request a refund from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. Apple decides.
Is there a signing app with no subscription?+
Yes. Apple Markup is free and built in. eSign PDF is $59.99 one-time (US), lifetime. Other plans and local prices are in the App Store.
