If it's a one-page field trip slip and you just need to sign it, you probably don't need to buy anything. Try Apple Markup first, as described below. Come back if the school says they can't see your signature, or the packet is ten pages long.
When Markup is enough
iPhone has a built-in signing tool. In Mail, tap the PDF, tap the Markup (pen) icon, tap +, then Add Signature. Drag the signature onto the line, tap Done, and reply to the teacher with the file attached.

When an app actually helps
- ✓Multi-page packets. Back-to-school enrollment, emergency contact, and medical forms often run several pages with a signature on each.
- ✓Dates, checkboxes, and typed answers. "I give permission" boxes, allergy details, and pickup names. Markup can add text boxes, but lining them up on a phone is slow.
- ✓The school office uses Windows, or a portal asks you to upload the PDF. Markup signatures are a layer on top of the page. Some non-Apple viewers don't show that layer, so the form looks unsigned. A flattened PDF shows everywhere.
- ✓Paper forms from the backpack. Scan the form with the camera, sign it, and email it back. No printer needed.
- ✓Several kids, several forms. The app saves your signature, so each form after the first is quick.
How to sign a school form with eSign PDF

Get the form into the app
Emailed PDF: tap it in Mail, tap Share, choose eSign PDF. Paper form: open the app and choose Scan a paper document. Point the camera at the form.

Most teachers are happy with a signed PDF sent as a reply to their email. Many districts also use a parent portal or an online form system. If the school sent a link to a form in their portal, fill it in there. Don't download it and email a separate copy.
Some forms need more than a parent signature. A medication authorization, for example, may also need a doctor's signature, and a few offices still ask for the paper original. If you're not sure, a one-line email to the office saves a second trip. When a portal asks you to upload a signed PDF, send a flattened one. The staff may open it on a Windows PC, where Markup signatures don't always show.
Mistakes that bounce back from the school
- ✕Signing the last page and missing the checkbox or initials earlier in the packet.
- ✕Sending a dark, angled photo of a paper form instead of a scan.
- ✕Leaving the date blank when the form asks for one.
- ✕Sending an unflattened file to a school that opens forms on Windows.

Can I sign a permission slip on my iPhone for free?+

Markup adds the signature as an annotation layer that some Windows viewers and portals don't show. Send a flattened copy, which merges the signature into the page.

Do both parents need to sign on the same phone?+
