A practical guide

Short answer

You can draw your signature with your finger or type your name in a handwriting style. You can also take one photo of your pen signature and reuse it. The photo looks most like your real signature. Drawing is quickest. Make it once and it's saved for next time. Apple's Markup only draws. eSign PDF does all three, with no account, for $59.99 one-time (US).

Make the photo signature look clean

  • ✓Sign on plain white paper with a black pen. Blue works too, but black looks sharper.
  • ✓Sign a bit larger than usual. It gets shrunk to fit the line.
  • ✓Take the photo in daylight, straight above the page, with no shadow from your phone.
  • ✓The app removes the white background, so only the ink lands on the document.

Make a finger signature look like you

  • ✓Sign slowly. Fast finger signatures come out spiky.
  • ✓Use the whole box. Small signatures look scratchy when placed.
  • ✓Clear and redo it a couple of times. Keep the one you like; it's saved for next time.
  • ✓Add your initials too if your forms ask for them on each page.

Then put it on the document

Open the PDF, tap the signature spot, and your saved signature drops in. The step-by-step for an emailed PDF is in sign a PDF from an email and send it back.
